Collins Takes the GOP Runoff
Republican Mike Collins has won the Georgia U.S. Senate runoff, giving conservatives a fresh shot at a seat they want to flip this fall. Decision Desk HQ projected Collins as the winner over Derek Dooley, the candidate backed by Gov. Brian Kemp. That matters because Georgia Republicans have spent years watching their big moments turn into nerve tests, and this one was no different. Collins now moves from the primary fight to the bigger battle against Democrat Sen. Jon Ossoff, who will have money, media, and the usual Washington cheer squad in his corner. But the runoff result shows Collins has enough support to survive a tough intraparty contest, and that is no small thing in a state where GOP voters do not always line up neatly like little schoolchildren waiting for a gold star.
Trump Backs Collins as the Race Tightens
President Donald Trump endorsed Collins over the weekend and called him a “true friend, fighter and warrior.” Trump’s statement painted Collins as a loyal America First candidate who would back lower taxes, stronger borders, energy independence, and a tougher approach to crime and election rules. He also went after Ossoff as weak on borders, taxes, and public safety, which is hardly subtle, but subtlety is not exactly the currency of modern politics. The endorsement gives Collins a major boost among Republican voters who still treat Trump’s support like the gold seal at the bottom of the page. In a close Georgia race, that kind of backing can matter a lot, especially when turnout and enthusiasm are expected to do much of the heavy lifting.
Ossoff Now Faces a Much Harder Fight
Collins now turns toward Ossoff, who will try to defend a seat in a state that remains fiercely competitive. Trump’s statement argued that Ossoff has voted for higher taxes, open borders, and soft-on-crime policies, while Collins has stood with the former president on border security and other conservative priorities. The fall race is likely to center on familiar Georgia fault lines: inflation, illegal immigration, taxes, crime, and who actually represents the state’s voters instead of the talking heads on cable news. Georgia has become one of the country’s most watched battlegrounds, and this Senate contest will be no exception. If Collins can keep the Republican base fired up and win over enough independents, Ossoff could be in for a long, very expensive autumn.
