Julian Assange Released Following Successful Plea Deal

Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, is set to plead guilty to a single felony count of unlawfully acquiring and revealing national security information as part of a plea agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice. This comes after enduring five strenuous years in a British prison.

Details of Plea Deal

The 52-year-old Assange’s decision to plead guilty arrives in exchange for his release. New York Times reports that Assange was permitted to present himself before a federal judge at one of the more secluded areas of the federal judiciary, Saipan’s courthouse located in the capital of Northern Mariana Islands. The report also indicates that he will likely receive a sentence equating roughly to his time served in Britain, approximately five years.

Court Appearance and Repatriation

Assange is expected to appear in court in Saipan at 9 am local time on Wednesday. Following the conclusion of proceedings, he is slated to return to Australia as indicated by Matthew J. McKenzie from the Justice Department’s counterterrorism division.

Family Reactions

Stella Assange, Julian’s wife, posted video footage showing her husband signing paperwork and boarding an airplane after these developments were made public. She also shared flight tracking information displaying his plane journey from London to Saipan.
