Comey Relative Warned Patrice That ‘86 47’ Post Was a ‘Call for Violence’

A Family Text Enters the Comey Case

A new exhibit in the federal criminal case against James Comey reportedly shows that his wife, Patrice Comey, received a blistering text from a family member after the “86 47” Instagram post aimed at President Trump became public. According to investigative reporter Paul Sperry, the relative wrote, “I have held my tongue for a long time, but I just can’t do it anymore. You guys have really gone off the deep end over the years with your TDS. ‘86 47’ is a call for violence no matter how you spin it. You should be ashamed of yourselves. I am thoroughly embarrassed to have ever defended the absolute coward that is your husband. You and Jim are some of the least accepting, most hypocritical people I’ve had the displeasure of knowing. I hope Jim goes to jail for his crimes.” That is not exactly a Hallmark family message, but it is now being cited as part of the larger fight over what Comey meant and what others believed the message meant.

The Screenshot Timing Raises More Questions

Sperry also reported last week that an FBI affidavit for a search warrant in the James Comey presidential threat case says Patrice Comey sent her husband a Google screenshot of a non-violent definition of the term “86” two minutes before Comey posted the now-infamous “86 47” rock picture on Instagram. Sperry said that timing “indicat[ed] some forethought his posting could be construed as a threat.” That detail matters because Comey’s public defense has leaned hard on the idea that this was all innocent, harmless, and misunderstood. Funny how the “we had no idea” routine gets a little harder to sell when a definition search allegedly shows up right before the post.

Comey’s Beach Walk Story Gets Another Look

James Comey posted the “86 47” Instagram image in May 2025 with the caption, “Cool shell formation on my beach walk.” Critics said “86 47” was a threat against the 47th president, Donald J. Trump. Comey later said on Instagram, “I posted earlier a picture of some shells I saw today on a beach walk, which I assumed were a political message. I didn’t realize some folks associate those numbers with violence. It never occurred to me but I oppose violence of any kind so I took the post down.” He later explained that he and Patrice saw the shells while walking back toward the road, and that Patrice asked why someone would put an address in the sand. Comey said he thought it was “some kind of political message,” while Patrice mentioned that in restaurant work, “86” meant removing an item from the menu. Comey said that to him, as a kid, it meant to leave or ditch a place.

The Charges Are Serious

Earlier this year, a grand jury from the Eastern District of North Carolina indicted Comey on two felony counts. Count One alleges he knowingly and willfully made a threat to take the life of, and inflict bodily harm upon, the President of the United States. Count Two alleges he knowingly and willfully transmitted in interstate and foreign commerce a communication that contained a threat to kill President Donald J. Trump. According to the source report, Comey is facing up to 20 years in prison. These are allegations, and the legal process will decide the outcome, but the newly reported exhibit and the alleged timing of the Google screenshot put fresh attention on the question Comey would rather the public stop asking: was this really just a quirky beach find, or did someone know exactly how “86 47” would land?
