Breaking: 10 Inmates Escape New Orleans Jail Through Hole Behind Toilet

In a daring overnight escape, ten inmates broke out of the Orleans Justice Center in New Orleans early Friday morning. The Escape

According to authorities, the inmates began their escape around 1:00 a.m. by removing a toilet from the wall, revealing a hole that led to a maintenance area. They then navigated through the facility, exited via a loading dock, and scaled the perimeter wall using blankets to avoid barbed wire. Surveillance footage captured the inmates sprinting across Interstate 10 shortly after their escape. 

The escape went unnoticed until a routine headcount at 8:30 a.m., more than seven hours later. At the time of the escape, the only guard assigned to the cell pod had reportedly left to get food, leaving the area unmonitored.

Manhunt and Recaptures

As of Saturday morning, three of the ten escapees have been recaptured:

• Kendell Myles, found hiding under a car in a hotel parking garage in the French Quarter.

• Robert Moody, apprehended in New Orleans following a tip to Crimestoppers.

• Dkenan Dennis, captured near Chef Menteur Highway.

Seven inmates remain at large and are considered armed and dangerous. Authorities have released their names and photographs to the public and are urging anyone with information to come forward.

Investigation and Security Concerns

Sheriff Susan Hutson stated that the escape was facilitated by “defective locks” and possibly assistance from individuals inside the department. Three employees have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

The Orleans Justice Center has been under federal monitoring for over a decade due to ongoing security issues and has been operating with only 60% of its required staff. Officials have long complained about the facility’s deteriorating infrastructure, including faulty locks and inadequate security measures. 

Public Safety Measures

In response to the escape, law enforcement agencies at the local, state, and federal levels have launched a coordinated manhunt. The FBI is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of any of the escaped inmates. 

Authorities have also taken steps to protect individuals who may be at risk, including relocating some victims and witnesses connected to the escapees’ cases.
