Obama’s Silence on ICE Deaths? Now He Speaks

Obama Weighs In and the Headlines Explode

Former President Obama called the death of armed protester Alex Pretti a tragedy and warned Americans about core values being under attack. That makes for a great sound bite. The thing is, when you look back at Obama-era records and reporting, the outrage from the left looks selective. People die in custody under many administrations. What changes is who gets shouted about by cable news and which deaths get branded as political ammunition.

What the Numbers From the Obama Years Show

By February 2016 there were at least 56 deaths in ICE custody since 2009, according to an ACLU report from that time. The same era logged millions of deportations. Those are not small numbers. Critics blamed poor medical care and mismanagement for many cases. The point is not to minimize any loss of life. The point is to show the media and activist reaction depends on politics, not consistent principle.

Media Double Standard Is Clear as Day

Remember the national fury and nonstop coverage when those 56 deaths were reported? Probably not. The reaction now to Pretti and another Minneapolis death this month has been amplified by sympathetic outlets and protest groups. When the politics line up, outrage becomes full time news. When it does not, even serious reports and data slip quietly into the background. That is the media model for the last decade.

Actions Matter More Than Sound Bites

Both Alex Pretti and another Minneapolis protester, Renee Good, were in confrontations that contributed to their own dangerous situations. Law enforcement officers enforce the law the way the Congress and presidents set it up. You can argue policy, but you cannot pretend enforcement is optional without consequences. Leaders who tsk-tsk from the sidelines should not get to rewrite cause and effect for political advantage.

How Conservatives Should Respond

Conservatives need two things. First, show compassion for the families involved while pushing facts. Second, keep pressing the media and politicians to treat all similar incidents the same way. Point to hard numbers from the Obama era and demand consistent coverage. If outrage is a moral compass, make it point in the same direction every time.
