What Happened
Officials discovered five suspected explosive devices in Fort Washington Park over the weekend after a call about suspicious packages in the woods. The Prince George’s County Fire Department Bomb Squad rendered those devices safe before stopping operations at sunset. Less than 24 hours later crews returned and found additional devices in a more remote section of the park. Authorities have not released an exact count for the later finds.
Who Is Responding
The Prince George’s County Fire and EMS Bomb Squad led the initial response. The U.S. Park Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives joined the investigation. The ATF will send the devices to its National Laboratory Center in the Beltsville, Maryland area for forensic analysis to determine origin and construction.
Public Safety and Park Status
Fort Washington Park is listed as closed until further notice on the National Park Service website. Officials say the devices were not recently placed, which raises questions about how long the hazards sat in the woods. Park visitors and nearby residents should avoid the area and follow official updates from local authorities.
Questions Authorities Will Need to Answer
Investigators will want to know who made the devices, why they were left in the park, and how many there really were. Forensic work at the ATF lab should reveal maker signatures and possibly trace evidence. Local and federal investigators will coordinate to build a full picture and pursue anyone responsible.
