In the wake of the tragic shooting in Minneapolis, the liberal media machine has once again seized upon a moment of national grief to advance its most extreme anti-Second Amendment agenda. During a discussion on MSNBC, a network notorious for its partisan advocacy, so-called reporter Mike Spies of the pro-gun control outlet The Trace revealed the true endgame for the left: the confiscation of firearms from law-abiding American citizens.
The segment, hosted by MSNBC’s Katy Tur, began with the kind of unsubstantiated propaganda that has become standard fare for the network. Tur boldly asserted, “The majority of Americans don’t own guns and the majority of Americans want stricter gun laws.” In typical fashion, she offered no evidence for this claim, deliberately ignoring the overwhelming fact that the number of firearms in civilian possession has soared to over 490 million as of 2022—a clear sign of a nation that cherishes its constitutional rights.
Rather than challenging this misinformation, Mike Spies eagerly concurred with Tur’s claims, setting the stage for a radical proposal. He lamented, “I do think there’s a lack of knowledge among lawmakers, and I think, like, the same playbook has been in force since background checks were first introduced in the 90s and the ‘assault weapons’ ban. We always go back to those things.” This dismissive attitude toward foundational gun control measures exposes the left’s insatiable appetite for ever-increasing restrictions.
Mike Spies on MSNBC: "Whether or not you like it, the only thing that really works, if you really wanted to bring down gun violence, was to do what Australia did and to do what many other countries in Europe do. I realize I will get so much hate mail over this. People will tell… pic.twitter.com/gGKZ4xoJ51

After paying lip service to so-called “red flag laws,” which themselves pose a grave threat to due process, Spies then unveiled the ultimate goal. He declared, “You have to be honest, and say what will actually work, which is what nobody wants to hear, which is that there are just simply way too many firearms, and they are way too accessible.” This rhetoric is a direct assault on the millions of peaceful Americans who own firearms for sport, collection, and most importantly, the fundamental right to self-defense.
Not content with this, Tur then prodded further, asking, “And they’re way too powerful?” to which Spies chillingly agreed, “And they’re too powerful, even handguns too, again, that’s why in Australia … The only thing that really works, if you really wanted to bring down gun violence, was to do what Australia did and to do what many other countries in Europe do.” Here, the mask comes off completely. The explicit call for an Australia-style mandatory buyback—a confiscation scheme—is a blatant betrayal of the U.S. Constitution and the freedoms it guarantees.
This extremist viewpoint stands in stark contrast to the unwavering support for the Second Amendment championed by President Donald Trump. While the liberal media and their allies demand citizens be disarmed and made vulnerable, President Trump continues to affirm the right of Americans to protect themselves, their families, and their property. His administration stands as the last bulwark against this kind of government overreach, defending the liberties that make America exceptional.
