East Hollywood Crash Update: Shooter Hunt Intensifies as Victims Fight for Life [Video]

The streets of East Hollywood are still reeling from a tragedy that unfolded in the early hours of July 19, when a car plowed into a crowd of pedestrians outside the Vermont Hollywood nightclub. Now, nearly a week later, investigators are piecing together a clearer picture of what happened that night and where the case stands today.

The East Hollywood Tragedy

Shortly after 2 a.m., 29-year-old Fernando Ramirez drove his gray Nissan Versa onto the sidewalk, striking dozens of clubgoers waiting outside the Vermont Hollywood. The car also slammed into a taco stand and valet booth, causing chaos and panic in a packed nightlife district. A total of 30 people were injured, including 23 who were taken to area hospitals. Seven remain in critical condition, six in serious condition, and the rest suffered minor injuries. Witnesses described a scene of horror as the car mounted the curb and mowed through the crowd. Amid the chaos, several bystanders pulled Ramirez from the vehicle, delivering blows before one unidentified individual opened fire, shooting him in the back. Ramirez was taken to the hospital, treated, and later placed under arrest on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

The Driver: Fernando Ramirez Identified

Ramirez, a Long Beach resident, had reportedly been ejected twice from the nightclub earlier in the evening for disruptive behavior and signs of intoxication. Police believe he may have returned in anger, but they have not yet confirmed whether the crash was intentional or the result of impairment or a medical emergency. Blood tests have been conducted to determine if drugs or alcohol were a factor. Investigators are also analyzing data from the car’s onboard computer to identify any mechanical issues or evidence of deliberate action.

The Shooter: Search Underway

The man who fired the shot at Ramirez remains at large. He is described as a Hispanic male, approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing around 180 pounds, bald, and wearing a blue sports jersey. Witnesses say he may have fled the scene on foot or possibly in a rideshare vehicle. LAPD detectives are combing through hours of surveillance footage from businesses along Vermont Avenue, as well as cellphone videos from witnesses, hoping to identify and apprehend the shooter.

The Victims and Community Impact

Seven victims are still fighting for their lives in critical condition, while others are recovering from serious injuries. Survivors have begun to share their stories, including Maria Medrano, a taco vendor who credited her stand with stopping the car’s deadly path. The incident has shaken East Hollywood’s nightlife community, prompting discussions about enhanced safety measures like installing barriers near popular venues to protect pedestrians.

Latest in the Investigation

Police officials have confirmed that no evidence currently points to a terrorism motive. They are focusing on the possibility of impairment or a medical episode, though the investigation remains active. Mayor Karen Bass praised first responders and vowed that authorities would pursue every lead to ensure accountability. Detectives are also seeking additional witness statements and video evidence to piece together the moments before, during, and after the crash.
