Former President Barack Obama’s attempt to lecture Texas Republicans on redistricting blew up in his face this week after social media users quickly exposed his staggering hypocrisy. On Tuesday, Obama took to X to decry Texas GOP efforts to redraw congressional districts, calling it a “power grab that undermines our democracy.” But critics were quick to remind him that his own home state of Illinois is one of the most aggressively gerrymandered states in the nation—a fact the liberal media conveniently ignores.
“We can’t lose focus on what matters – right now,” Obama wrote. “Republicans in Texas are trying to gerrymander district lines to unfairly win five seats in next year’s midterm elections. This is a power grab that undermines our democracy.”

The backlash was immediate and brutal. Conservatives and independent observers roasted Obama for his selective outrage, pointing out that Illinois Democrats have systematically rigged district maps to lock in permanent one-party rule. One X user fired back, “Illinois has the most corrupt gerrymandering in the country, and Obama’s silence was deafening when his party did it. Typical liberal hypocrisy.” Others mocked his failed legacy, with one tweet quipping, “Remember when Obama promised to ‘fundamentally transform’ America? Yeah, we’re still cleaning up that mess.”

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has been a vocal advocate for fair and strategic redistricting, urging Texas Governor Greg Abbott and state lawmakers to maximize Republican representation ahead of the critical 2026 midterms. Unlike Obama, who weaponized the DOJ and IRS against his political opponents, Trump has fought to ensure election integrity and proportional representation—something the left fears because they know they can’t win on policy.

The liberal media, of course, has been silent on Illinois’ blatant gerrymandering while amplifying Obama’s disingenuous complaints about Texas. This double standard is nothing new. The same outlets that spent years pushing the debunked “Russia Collusion Hoax”—a scandal Obama’s administration helped orchestrate—now pretend to care about “democratic norms.”
