Biden Touts His Anti-Oil Record
Joe Biden apparently thought a joyride in a vintage car was the perfect setting to brag about choking off American oil production. During an appearance on Jay Leno’s Garage, Biden said, “The other thing I was able to do, I made sure there could be no oil drilling off the East Coast, the West Coast and 150 miles off the Gulf of Mexico.” That is not exactly the kind of line that warms the hearts of working families at the pump. It is the kind of boast that sounds great in elite Hollywood company, then lands like a lead balloon everywhere else. Biden was speaking about a record that included his push to limit offshore drilling and his earlier move to cancel the Keystone XL pipeline on day one in office.
The Oil Industry Took Hit After Hit
The clip comes after a long string of Biden decisions that hit domestic energy hard. In 2023, he blocked oil drilling on 10 million acres in Alaska. Then, in January 2025, in one of his final acts as president, he permanently banned offshore drilling across 625 million acres of U.S. ocean. That is a massive footprint, and it sent a very clear message: American energy producers were not welcome. President Trump later moved to overturn Biden’s Arctic drilling ban, but legal hurdles have slowed that fight. The bigger point is simple. When you make it harder to produce American energy, you do not create magic. You create less supply, more uncertainty, and a lot of frustrated voters who still have to drive to work.
Hollywood, Ice Cream, and Energy Policy
Of course, nothing says “middle-class concern” quite like two multimillionaires cruising around in a classic gas guzzler while talking about kneecapping the oil industry. Biden and Leno were also spotted getting ice cream in La Cañada Flintridge while filming the episode, which adds a nice cherry on top of the usual celebrity insulation. The footage has drawn attention because it shows the people making the rules laughing about the rules they impose on everyone else. That kind of tone-deafness is the real story here. Regular Americans pay the bills, fill the tank, and deal with the consequences. The ruling class gets a vintage car, a camera crew, and a smug little monologue about how they “made sure” drilling could not happen.

Why This Clip Matters
The reason this video is getting traction is not because Biden slipped up in a small way. It is because he sounded proud of a policy many Americans see as hostile to cheap, reliable energy. Conservatives have long argued that America should be drilling, refining, and producing as much energy as possible, not begging hostile foreign powers while throttling our own supply. Biden’s words, paired with the setting, make the whole thing feel even more disconnected from normal life. If you are trying to win over families that feel crushed by prices, bragging about killing drilling is not the way. It is the kind of line that tells voters exactly who the system was built for, and it is not them.
