Canada Publicly Shamed the U.S., Then Barred a Player Facing Seven Rape Charges

The U.S. turns back Omar Artan

Canada’s political class spent days preaching about fairness after the United States denied entry to Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan at Miami International Airport. U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the decision came after vetting concerns, and a U.S. official later said the issue involved association with suspected members of terror organizations. Artan, who had a valid visa and diplomatic passport, was questioned for about 11 hours before being turned away. He later returned home to a hero’s welcome in Somalia, and UEFA still assigned him to referee the UEFA Super Cup final in Salzburg. So yes, the world kept spinning, even if the lecture circuit did not.

Canadian leaders rushed to defend him

British Columbia Premier David Eby and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow both rushed to invite Artan to Canada, with Chow saying Toronto believes in fairness, inclusion, and giving talent a chance to shine. That sounds nice until you remember that borders are not a poetry slam. Countries still have to decide who gets in, and they do not have to treat every denial like a moral crisis just because social media is breathing heavily. The funny part is that the same people who want open arms for one foreign visitor suddenly discover the concept of screening when the facts get uncomfortable.

Then Canada blocked Thomas Partey

Now Canada has denied entry to Ghana national team midfielder Thomas Partey, keeping him out of Ghana’s World Cup opener in Toronto. FIFA confirmed that Canadian authorities rejected his visa application. Multiple reports say Partey is facing several rape and sexual assault charges in the United Kingdom, though he has pleaded not guilty and denies wrongdoing, and his trial is set for 2027. Unlike the earlier lectures about compassion and access, this time the Canadian government said no, which is a reminder that borders still exist whether activists like it or not. Partey was allowed into the United States on June 3, 2026, and has been training with Ghana’s squad in the Boston and Rhode Island area, but Canada has made clear he will not be traveling north for the Toronto match.
