A pricey shortcut for visa applicants
The State Department is preparing a new premium service that would let certain foreign business and tourist visa applicants pay an extra $750 to get interview appointments within 10 days at select U.S. embassies and consulates. That is on top of the normal $185 visa application fee, which means a family or business traveler could be looking at a much higher bill just to get a seat at the interview window. The program is set up as a pilot from July 1 through Dec. 31, with the chance of being extended if demand is strong. In other words, if you have enough money, the line may suddenly move faster. Not a guarantee, just faster access
The premium fee does not promise a visa approval. It only gives applicants a faster shot at the interview itself, which is an important distinction the government is sure to emphasize while collecting the money. For travelers from countries outside the Visa Waiver Program, visa wait times can already stretch for months, so even a faster interview slot could matter. Still, no one should confuse a paid shortcut with a free pass. The interview is still part of the process, and the final decision remains in the hands of U.S. officials.
Tighter screening is driving delays
The rollout comes as the Trump administration has expanded visa screening and compliance rules, including bonds of up to $15,000 for applicants from certain countries with high overstay rates and broader disclosure requirements that can include years of personal history and social media accounts. Those rules are meant to tighten border controls and make sure visitors play by the rules, which is a pretty sensible idea in a country that has spent too long pretending paperwork enforces itself. But the added checks have also slowed processing in many places. The State Department says the new premium option could help cut wait times, while still keeping the tougher screening standards in place.
