House Passes $70 Billion Border Enforcement Bill, Sends It to Trump

House sends border funding bill to Trump

The House of Representatives voted Tuesday to pass a reconciliation bill that would fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection, sending the measure to President Trump’s desk after a narrow fight. The final vote was 214-212, with every Republican present voting yes and every Democrat voting no. In Washington, that is about as close to a party-line vote as you can get without printing the party labels on the chairs.

$70 billion for DHS immigration work

The bill provides $70 billion to fund the Department of Homeland Security’s immigration functions for the rest of Trump’s term. Supporters say that money is needed to keep the border enforcement machinery moving and to back the agencies that are supposed to do the job lawmakers keep talking about. Critics focused on what the package did not include, especially language that would block Trump from restoring an anti-weaponization fund meant to compensate people hit by Biden-era lawfare.

Senate fights spilled into the House

The measure came out of a messy Senate fight that also touched Trump’s proposed White House Ballroom funding and the anti-weaponization fund. Some Republicans reportedly tried to force more border policy changes into the bill, while others pushed to stop the White House Ballroom from moving forward at all. Six Republicans backed a failed amendment from Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley that would have required congressional approval for the ballroom construction, but the final bill still passed with only Sen. Lisa Murkowski voting no.

Melugin reports the final vote

Fox’s Bill Melugin reported that the House passed the Senate reconciliation bill to fund ICE and CBP with $70 billion over the next three years, and that it would now head to President Trump for signature. The vote showed a simple truth that Washington loves to pretend is complicated: when it comes to border security, Republicans are still the ones expected to clean up the mess while Democrats vote against the broom.
